Preview: Death of Wolverine 1
Charles Soule & Steve McNiven
I am glad Alex Ross put Logan’s best costume front and center.
And im like kinda stoked to see how they play this out and how it effects everything afterwardssss
That’s where I am with this. I have seen people nay say the story, as if Marvel has killed Wolverine a bunch of times already, and this is not big deal.
Has he been “killed”? Sure, he has kicked the bucket for a few panels, or within the context of a single story, and is back before the arc is finished. They have been plot devices, not the roots for macro arcs. The times he has been considered dead, are such transitory experiences they don’t really count as being dead in comic book terms.
This is the first time Marvel is going to deal with the ramifications, and fallout of a world without Wolverine. He is a central cog in Marvel’s top 2 franchises. His influence is felt across the entire line of books. His relationships with people like Cyclops and Captain America are the fuel to major arcs. The private relationships are no less compelling. More than one book has his name on the title.
What happens when his presence is no longer felt? Who will rise to replace his various roles? Who will falter, and fall without his support?
What happens to the schism in house Xavier when Scott’s most vocal critic is gone? Are other voices able to change their course? How does Scott deal with it? Jean died in his arms before he could address his adultery. Charles died at his hands, while he was consumed by the Phoenix. Now Logan is dead before they could make their peace, He outlived the 3 most central people in his life under the worst of circumstances.
What new relationships, and bonds will be made because of, and after his death?
The ideas that will roll out of this fallout are new in the context of Logan’s impact on the MU. Marvel has spent the last year + breaking him down, and defining who he is at his core. Marvel looks to be giving the man a swan song befitting his life. I look forward to the exploration of a world without Logan, before his eventual and triumphant return.
